Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)
Clinical
- Mean age 55-60
- Spread is typically over peritoneal surface
- Metastases may be seen to liver, lungs, bone
- Lymph node metastases very rare except in SDHB deficient syndromic and pediatric-type cases
- Most cases responsive to Imatinib mesylate (tyrosine kinase inhibitor)
- Also known as Gleevec or Glivec
- CD117 negative cases may still respond
- If further therapy is anticipated, identification of the precise mutation is worthwhile for determining therapy
- SDHB deficient cases are poorly sensitive
